Before my tonight's yoga class one of my yoga students (a middle aged lady)complained to me about her back. She said that she had a bad back pain and was thinking to skip tonight's class because of that. I adviced her to take it easy and to listen carefully her back during the yoga class. I told her that she was lucky as I was just about to give a class that had the focus in opening the back and stretching the spine. Actually I was quite a sure that the class would be beneficial to her although I knew from my own experience that it can cause some doubts when you are having an acute pain in the back to do the class. Most people just decide to give up and have some rest.

Sometimes the rest is needed and the correct thing to do, but in this time right after my class the yoga student told me with a sparkle in her eyes that the back pain was gone completely. Her back felt back to normal again. I smiled and told her that the same had happened to myself just few weeks ago. I had enrolled to a workshop directed to yoga teachers and very advanced yogis and just few days before the workshop I felt a strage pain in my back and it just didn't go away. I could hardly teach my own classes and I was about to cancel the workshop. Anyhow, I decided to participate and just skip the things that would be impossible for my back. But at the end I was as lucky as this student of mine as the workshop was targeting the spine and during the 2,5 hours we gradually opened it and stretched the spine in ways that just magically cured my back.

I gave a big hug to the teacher and told her what had happened to me. She said that she had also healed her own back with that yoga sequence and we smiled. Especially if you are used to exercise a lot and already have a flexible spine regrdless of the sudden pain in your back you should keep on stretching it. Actually with a proper knowledge of the spine and its movements , the body can be trained to maintain its flexibility from early childhood until the old age. And all the benefits derived from the spinal movements cannot be explained even in one book. Sometimes when your back feels stuck it is enough to participate to a yoga class of an experienced yoga teacher who can lead your way towards healthier spine.

You can also try to do this short but very effective and comprehensive yoga sequence once a day or in the morning and evening for best results. This yoga sequence is actually taking care of all parts of your body. Be very careful if you have neck and shoulder problems. Before starting any physical activity or exercise, always consult a physician.
